RONGO 3 BEDROOM HIP AND GABLE MAISONETTE DESIGN
This project is located in Rongo Migori County. This 3 bedroom maisonette was designed as a tailored response to a unique site condition. The plot is longer than it is wide, calling for a custom layout that would sit comfortably within the land while still delivering generous interior spaces and a strong architectural presence. With roads bordering the front and both sides, the design also had to present itself beautifully from every angle. The result is a home planned with care, character, and visual appeal on all visible sides.
MAISONETTE STYLE
In style, the house brings together modern and traditional architectural ideas. Its character is defined by a pitched hip and gable roof finished with galvanized roofing sheets, creating a form that is both familiar and refined. This blend of influences gives the home a timeless appeal and thus ensuring it remains practical, elegant, and responsive to its environment.
SPACE ORGANIZATION
The ground floor is organized for convenience and practical family living. Two bedrooms are located on this level. Bedroom 01 is ensuite, complete with a shower, toilet, and hand wash basin, while Bedroom 02 shares the common bath with visitors. This planning approach allowed the home to provide two bathrooms on the ground floor instead of three, reducing unnecessary construction costs while still maintaining comfort and function. Both bedrooms are fitted with built in wardrobes, giving each room efficient storage.
A 1.2 metre wide staircase forms one of the key interior features of the home. It is generously sized for residential use and benefits from an expansive window that brings in abundant natural light. The area below the stair has also been used effectively, housing a kitchen pantry that adds valuable storage without wasting space.
The living room is spacious and inviting, designed to feel bright, airy, and comfortable. Large windows bring in natural light and support cross ventilation, creating a pleasant interior environment throughout the day. Depending on the seating arrangement, the room can accommodate a 12 seater sofa, making it well suited for both family use and entertaining guests.
Connected directly to both the living room and the kitchen, the dining area forms an important social heart within the house. Its placement allows for easy interaction between spaces while still maintaining privacy, since the kitchen is not directly exposed to the living room. The dining space also includes a hand wash basin and a dedicated servery, offering added convenience during mealtimes and gatherings. Two large windows, measuring 2 metres and 1.5 metres, further brighten the space and strengthen the sense of openness.
The kitchen was planned for ease of use and efficient circulation. It can be reached from the dining area and other parts of the home without requiring movement through the living room, improving privacy and functionality. It features expansive worktops, space for a double door refrigerator, a gas cooker, and a double sink. A large 2.1 metre wide window brings in generous natural light, making the kitchen feel open and pleasant to work in. The kitchen also opens out to a kitchen porch, which connects directly to a dedicated walk in laundry room. This laundry space accommodates both a washer and dryer, along with storage shelves, creating a practical utility zone within the home.
The upper floor is reserved entirely for the master suite, giving it a sense of privacy and exclusivity. Designed to accommodate a 6 by 6 bed, the room also provides space for a television area and a bedroom lounge, creating a comfortable retreat within the home. A standout feature of the master bedroom is its two balconies, one facing the front and the other at the rear. These balconies give the homeowner sweeping views around the compound and strengthen the connection between the house and its surroundings.
The master suite is ensuite and comes complete with a walk in closet, shower, toilet, and hand wash basin. Its arrangement supports both comfort and privacy, making it a calm and well appointed personal space.
